Where
other people had hobbies, Dad had obsessions. And for many years
woodworking and metalworking numbered among these. Dad also had
a
collection of American Machinist (I think) and a couple of other
magazines that we are going to try to give away. We will also
have a
sale of all Dad's remaining tools, equipment, and books.
Thanks you,

Mark McDade brought an inexpensive stand alone 6" digital
scale that he
had bought for $28 + $7 shipping. It also features a SPI port
that
allowed it to be connected to a display box. All of these items
including scales up to ~ 40"are available from his messages
below:
Here's the URL for the company that sells the cheap scales:

On the left side of the page, almost to the bottom, click on
'DRO Digital Scales.'
Here's the whole URL down to the scales (it's long and may
not email intact):

p.s.
The 8" scale I showed you at the meeting was $28.45 +
shipping.
Looks like they have them out to at least 40" (1m) for $192
-
still cheap for what it is. They also have glass scales, etc.

Bill,
p.p.s. on the scales:
I played around with some Jo-blocks and the cheap scale
last night (in inch mode) and it looks like it's accurate
to +/- 0.001" - the final half-digit isn't for real - that's
still quite adequate for most milling jobs and for the
z-axis on most turning jobs

Another member who wishes anonymity showed his results from
acid sharpening files. He found that a file card scrubbing of
the file
followed by careful removal of any pins (I use a piece of brass
sheet
attached to the back of the card) then followed by a thorough
wash in
solvent was necessary for proper sharpening. I have boiled the
file in
detergent and water as a final cleaning. Then etching in Hydrochloric
(Muriatic), Nitric, or Acetic (Vinegar) to sharpen. His best success
came with 54 hours in the Vinegar! At the next meeting I will
be asking
for comments and reports on others efforts in sharpening files!
On another note I tried a trick of rubbing a fine oilstone over
the
teeth of a fine file against the cutting direction. It will develop
a
shine indicating that the tops of the teeth have leveled off.
This file
now will take very fine cuts and leave a very smooth surface!
I will be sending a report on the meeting shortly. About 16
members
attended and several took home bargains! Bill

At our last meeting Mike Gombert mentioned a web site which
has engine plans. It is:
http://www.john-tom.com/html/ElmersEngines.html
It has most of the plans from "Elmers Engines" book.
Also, Mike has a CD of the book, which he scanned several years
ago, that he will share. Contact Mike at: mdgombert@comcast.net

I ran the following by John and some others and think that
it might
be worth putting on the site!

Subject: Sharpening Dull Files
To sharpen dull files first clean and degrease them
thoroughly. Boiling in water with detergent works well. Hook to
a 12
VDC battery charger.
Use dilute sulphuric acid, ( Battery acid) about 2.5% as the
electrolyte.
Use a coil of copper wire as the cathode. They come up better than
new.
This is very similiar to the electrolytic derusting proceedure.
