Mark McDade brought an inexpensive stand alone 6" digital scale that he
had bought for $28 + $7 shipping. It also features a SPI port that
allowed it to be connected to a display box. All of these items
including scales up to ~ 40"are available from his messages below:

Here's the URL for the company that sells the cheap scales:

http://stores.ebay.com/Discount-Machine-Shop

On the left side of the page, almost to the bottom, click on
'DRO Digital Scales.'

Here's the whole URL down to the scales (it's long and may
not email intact):

p.s.

The 8" scale I showed you at the meeting was $28.45 + shipping.
Looks like they have them out to at least 40" (1m) for $192 -
still cheap for what it is. They also have glass scales, etc.

Mark

Bill,

p.p.s. on the scales:

I played around with some Jo-blocks and the cheap scale
last night (in inch mode) and it looks like it's accurate
to +/- 0.001" - the final half-digit isn't for real - that's
still quite adequate for most milling jobs and for the
z-axis on most turning jobs

Mark

Another member who wishes anonymity showed his results from
acid sharpening files. He found that a file card scrubbing of the file
followed by careful removal of any pins (I use a piece of brass sheet
attached to the back of the card) then followed by a thorough wash in
solvent was necessary for proper sharpening. I have boiled the file in
detergent and water as a final cleaning. Then etching in Hydrochloric
(Muriatic), Nitric, or Acetic (Vinegar) to sharpen. His best success
came with 54 hours in the Vinegar! At the next meeting I will be asking
for comments and reports on others efforts in sharpening files!
On another note I tried a trick of rubbing a fine oilstone over the
teeth of a fine file against the cutting direction. It will develop a
shine indicating that the tops of the teeth have leveled off. This file
now will take very fine cuts and leave a very smooth surface!

I will be sending a report on the meeting shortly. About 16 members
attended and several took home bargains! Bill

I am pleased to tell you that Bill Williams has agreed to take over responsibility for the things I have been doing as 'General Manager' for the Colorado
Model Engineering Society. (As a matter of historical accuracy, the title of General Manager was created by Jerry Howell when he first set up our Web-site.
He told me he just couldn't think of any other name. I believe that I used the title a couple of times in sending out thank you letters to some organizations
which had held meetings. Bill may or may not continue to use the title.)

You can contact Bill via e-mail at bwmsbldr(AT)peoplepc(DOT)com or phone (303) 440-9839.

I would suggest that you put his e-mail address in your Address Book or list, because some spam screeners require it to receive mail from him. It is possible
that we will have some difficulties getting all the communications transferred, and I will be happy to forward any messages which you might send to me. I am not going away, I will still be attending meetings and available for helping you in any way I can. I have been doing this for a lot of years and believe that Bill Williams will do an even better job at keeping our association moving forward. Thanks to all of you for your support.

Hi John, the engine kit that I have was put out by Debolt Machine Inc in Zanesville, Oh. it is a model of a 1-3/4 hp

Stickney. It has 8" cast iron flywheels, I have done some of the machine work, but not a lot. I bought the kit from

Jerry Howell in about 1999 he had had the kit for quite a while he said. Jerry said that Debolt had not put out any

of those kits for quite a long time. I paid Jerry $600.00 for the kit then, and I have done some of the machine work

and gotten some of the extra parts also. I would like to get $700.00 for the kit.

The following suggestion is from Les Burg, and warrants serious attention.
We should always read the directions and cautions on all materials and supplies,
but when ignorance might kill you, it is even more important. Take a look at
the link provided for a horror story. But be careful in all situations, and pay
attention to the fine print.

I don't know how true this is but I use a lot of brake clean in my shop.
Maybe you would like to share this with the members?.............................Les

One of the men who used to attend our meetings, John Gargano, (who now
lives in
Florida) has been contacted by a man from Switzerland who would like to
have some
model engines constructed. If you have any interest in such a project,
contact me, John Beall, to discuss it.John B. Beall

Hi Ken,
I live in Pueblo and have had several dealings with your group, especially Bill Williams. Anyway, I have recently received a patent for an internal combustion engine with a sidewall combustion chamber (US Patent 7,387,093) and more importantly, I am applying concepts used in the patented engine to modify a Stirling engine for more output power. I also recently entered the modified Stirling engine in the NASA Create the Future Design Constest and it helps my chances for winning if more people view the entry. So, I would certainly appreciate it if you would view the entry yourself, and if you feel it has merit, then I would also appreciate you tell other members from the group to view the entry as well. The contest entry can be viewed at:
http://www.createthefuturecontest.com/pages/view/entriesdetail.html?entryID=1329
Finally, if there is anyone with comments regrading the engine or if they wish to know more, then I would be glad to talk with them directly. I'm in the process of building the Stirling at the machine shop at Pueblo Community College, but the going is slow because the shop is mostly closed down for the summer. The contest has a lot of neat entries and your members will probably enjoy seeing them. Check it out.
Regards,
Jim Hacsi
Pueblo

Sorry to advise you that Gunnar Blanke died in April. He attended a few of our meetings, and was only 61.

I am sorry to tell you that Carl Vandre died on 6 February 2008. The
following link will take you to a very informative obituary about him.

At our last meeting Mike Gombert mentioned a web site which
has engine plans. It is: http://www.john-tom.com/html/ElmersEngines.html
It has most of the plans from "Elmers Engines" book.
Also, Mike has a CD of the book, which he scanned several years
ago, that he will share. Contact Mike at: mdgombert@comcast.net

I ran the following by John and some others and think that it might
be worth putting on the site!
--------- Forwarded message ----------

Subject: Sharpening Dull Files

To sharpen dull files first clean and degrease them
thoroughly. Boiling in water with detergent works well. Hook to a 12
VDC battery charger.

Use dilute sulphuric acid, ( Battery acid) about 2.5% as the electrolyte.
Use a coil of copper wire as the cathode. They come up better than new.

This is very similiar to the electrolytic derusting proceedure.
